What Is Pink New Zealand Flax?

Pink New Zealand flax refers to selected cultivars of the Phormium family, known for their variegated pink-toned leaves. Unlike the plain green Phormium tenax found naturally across New Zealand, these cultivated varieties provide a range of pink, red, and cream accents. Plants often grow between 1 to 1.5 metres tall, forming graceful clumps that move beautifully in the wind. Their strong architectural form makes them valuable for structure and contrast among softer garden plantings.

Popular Varieties of Pink New Zealand Flax

There are several standout pink New Zealand flax cultivars to consider:

Growing and Caring for Pink New Zealand Flax

Pink New Zealand flax is delightfully low-maintenance. Plant in full sun to light shade for the best colour intensity. It will tolerate a range of soils but prefers moist, free-draining conditions. Once established, it copes well with wind, salt spray, and even light frosts, making it an ideal choice for exposed sites or coastal gardens. For ongoing vitality, remove spent leaves and apply mulch annually. Flax does not require frequent fertilising but responds well to a slow-release native plant fertiliser.

How to Use Pink New Zealand Flax in Your Garden

Because of its bold color and form, pink New Zealand flax is a favourite for statement planting. Use it as a striking focal point or in mass plantings for a modern, architectural look. Pink flax pairs beautifully with native grasses, hebes, and groundcovers. It also works well beside paths, in patio pots, or even as a loose hedge for privacy and shelter.

Create your own designer garden with instant impact by combining pink New Zealand flax with other striking Phormium varieties like Phormium 'Jester', Phormium 'Velvet Underground', or the classic green Phormium tenax.
