What Is a Pink Kousa Dogwood?

The pink kousa dogwood (Cornus kousa) is a deciduous tree renowned for its profusion of pink, star-like blooms in late spring to early summer. Unlike the classic white kousa dogwoods, pink cultivars offer a unique twist with their rosy flowers. One of the most popular selections is Cornus kousa 'Satomi', which is celebrated for its vibrant deep pink bracts that linger well into early summer. These trees typically reach around 4-6 metres tall, creating an attractive canopy and providing year-round interest—the lush green summer foliage turns brilliant shades of red and purple in autumn.

Growing Pink Kousa Dogwood in New Zealand

Pink kousa dogwoods thrive in well-drained soil and appreciate a position with partial shade to full sun. They are prized for their tolerance to powdery mildew and their ability to withstand urban conditions, making them perfect for suburban gardens. When planting, ensure the soil is slightly acidic and rich in organic matter for optimal health. Regular watering during establishment helps your tree get off to a strong start, but once mature, kousa dogwoods are low-maintenance and drought tolerant.

Pink Kousa Dogwood Varieties and Similar Options

If you’re specifically after a pink kousa dogwood, Cornus kousa 'Satomi' is a top choice for stunning pink flower displays. For those who desire a classic look, Cornus kousa 'Chinensis' offers crisp white blooms, while Cornus kousa brings a traditional appeal. For shrub forms with pink accents, Cornus 'Stokes Pink' showcases soft pink stems and foliage. Another excellent alternative is Cornus florida 'Spring Song', which features radiant pink flowers and makes a striking shrub for layered borders.

Landscaping and Garden Uses

The pink kousa dogwood lends itself beautifully to a range of landscaping applications. Its upright, decorative shape is perfect as a focal point in smaller gardens or lining driveways. Use it to frame vistas, accompany entryways, or create seasonal colour in mixed borders. The autumn foliage and edible red fruits also add interest beyond the flowering season, supporting local wildlife.
