What Makes Pink King Protea (Protea ‘Pink Ice’) Special?

The pink king protea is a hybrid, bred from the same lineage as the iconic Protea cynaroides (King Protea), but offering some unique advantages. Its flowers are slightly smaller than those of the true king protea, but bloom more prolifically and reliably in our local conditions. These blooms open from winter through spring, producing stunning cones up to 15 cm across, surrounded by soft, feathery pink bracts. The foliage, with its silvery-green tones, provides year-round interest.

Pink Ice is renowned for its tolerance to a range of soils and climates, performing beautifully in both coastal and inland gardens. Its drought and frost hardiness make it one of the most versatile proteas for planting in New Zealand.

How to Grow and Care for Pink King Protea

Growing a pink king protea is a rewarding experience, even for gardeners with less experience. Start with a sunny spot and well-drained, slightly acidic soil – proteas dislike wet feet and heavy clay. Minimal fertiliser is required, and it’s important to avoid phosphorus-rich mixes, as proteas are sensitive to phosphate. Use a slow-release, low-phosphorus fertiliser if needed.

Mulching helps retain moisture, suppresses weeds, and keeps the root zone cool. Once established, Protea Pink Ice copes with extended dry spells and only needs watering during extreme drought. Prune lightly after flowering to shape the shrub and encourage new growth, while removing spent blooms to improve next season’s display.

Landscape and Companion Planting

The stately form and unique colours of pink king protea make it a perfect centrepiece for mixed borders, native gardens, or as an eye-catching specimen in large planters. Their long-lasting blooms are wonderful for floral arrangements, making them a favourite for cutting gardens.

For a layered effect and year-round structure, combine with other protea varieties such as Protea Fiery Sunset, Protea Franciscan, or contrast the flowers with the creamy hues of Protea White Ice and vivid greens of Protea Limelight. Complementary shrubs like Buxus 'Curly Locks' (Chinese Box Plant), Rhododendron Seta, or Ilex Green Pillar can add textural contrast. Bring additional pops of colour by pairing with Potentilla Double Red (Red Potentilla) or the fiery hues of Lagerstroemia 'Flamenco'.

A Unique Protea for Every Garden

If you’re new to proteas or expanding a collection, the pink king protea (Protea ‘Pink Ice’) is an outstanding choice. Its reliable flowering, versatile growth, and exceptional cut flowers make it a long-term investment in beauty and style. Visit our nursery to discover Protea Pink Ice alongside other exceptional selections – transform your garden with the colour, structure, and drama only a true protea can bring.
