cherry-dawson-2

Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Why Plant a Pink Flowering Cherry Tree?

A pink flowering cherry tree, especially varieties like Prunus Accolade, is prized for early spring blossoms and lush green foliage that follows. In New Zealand’s cool to temperate climates, these trees thrive and set off stunning pink petals ranging from pale blush to deep magenta. Their showy floral display makes them a perfect feature tree, driveway border, or even a delightful addition to cottage-style gardens.

Cherry blossom trees also symbolise renewal and joy—a beautiful tradition brought to life in your own landscape. With their moderate growth rate and manageable size, pink flowering cherry trees fit both large and small garden designs. If you love spring colour and want to attract native birds or pollinators, this is an ornamental choice you won’t regret.

Popular Pink Cherry Varieties

For the best results, many gardeners choose tried-and-true specimens like Prunus Accolade. This cultivar is widely admired for its semi-double pink blooms that cover the tree in late winter and early spring. The elegant, arching branches provide a soft, romantic silhouette, blending beautifully into established gardens or new plantings.

If you’re also interested in cherry trees for both ornamental and fruiting qualities, explore options like Cherry Rainier, Cherry Dawson, Cherry Modesto, or Cherry Griotella Frumi. Each offers its unique display and, in the case of fruiting varieties, a juicy summer harvest.

Planting and Caring Tips

A pink flowering cherry tree prefers a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Choose a location protected from strong winds to help preserve the delicate blossoms. Mulching and regular watering during dry periods will keep your tree healthy and happy. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage vibrant new growth.

To support pollinators and create a dynamic garden, plant your pink flowering cherry tree near other spring favourites like rhododendrons, camellias, or magnolias.

Beautiful Blooms, Year After Year

Adding a pink flowering cherry tree is not just about seasonal colour—it’s about making memories and bringing joy to your home landscape for generations. Whether you prefer the ornamental flowers of Prunus Accolade or are inspired to try fruiting types like Cherry Rainier, your garden will benefit from their timeless beauty and low-maintenance appeal.

Ready to embrace spring’s most captivating blossoms? Discover our stunning range of pink flowering cherry trees and transform your New Zealand garden into a blossom-filled haven.
