Why Plant a Pink Flowering Almond Tree?

The pink flowering almond tree (Prunus glandulosa or related cultivars) is celebrated for its profusion of double or single pink blossoms in late winter and early spring, often before the leaves appear. These blooms transform bare branches into a vision of delicate colour, bringing the promise of warmer days ahead. Ideal as a specimen shrub, in mixed borders, or even a large container, the pink flowering almond is low maintenance and easy to grow in most parts of New Zealand.

Growing Tips for Pink Flowering Almond Trees

For best results, plant your pink flowering almond tree in well-drained soil with full sun to light shade. It tolerates many soil types but prefers slightly alkaline soils. Pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact shape and encourages healthy new growth for next year’s floral display. While generally hardy, some shelter from strong winds will protect the delicate blossoms. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first couple of years after planting.

Beautiful Companion Plants for Spring Colour

Enhance your spring garden by pairing the pink flowering almond tree with other pink or contrasting flowering shrubs. Consider planting Deutzia Compact Pink (Compact Pink Deutzia) nearby for its fluffy late-spring blooms, or add Rhaphiolepis Enchantress (Pink Indian Hawthorn) for evergreen foliage and persistent pink flower clusters. For a layered look with varying pink hues, try Cornus 'Stokes Pink' or the unique new foliage of Cedrela sinensis Flamingo (Toon Tree). The elegant, bell-shaped blossoms of Pieris Pink Delight (Lily Of The Valley Shrub Pieris japonica) also make a wonderful complement.

Seasonal Interest and Wildlife Benefits

Beyond its spectacular spring show, the pink flowering almond tree offers lush greenery through summer, and some varieties feature striking autumn colour as well. Its flowers are magnets for bees and early pollinators, making it an asset for wildlife-friendly gardens. Compact varieties are well suited to small spaces and urban gardens, combining maximum impact with minimal fuss.

Incorporate a pink flowering almond tree into your garden design and enjoy years of breathtaking spring blooms, year-round interest, and a living connection to the beauty of the changing seasons. For more exceptional flowering shrubs and trees to enhance your space, explore our collections—including favourites like Deutzia Compact Pink (Compact Pink Deutzia) and Rhaphiolepis Enchantress (Pink Indian Hawthorn).
