Pieris Forest Flame is an attractive shrub grown for both its foliage and flowers. This compact, rounded shrub produces reddish-purple flower buds that first open as soft-pink then mature to white. The flowers are mildly fragrant and these are produced from winter through spring. New growth in spring is bright red which then fades to pink and cream before aging to pale green. Pieris Forest Flame makes for a superb specimen in a small garden and is well suited to growing in a container, adding to mixed plantings, formal gardens, for border planting, or planting around the barbecue area.

Features of Pieris Forest Flame

The key feature that makes pieris jap forest flame so eye-catching is its brilliant flush of scarlet-red new leaves in early spring. These gradually change to pink, then creamy-white, and finally mature to rich green. Pieris Forest Flame also produces delicate, lily of the valley-like flowers in pendulous clusters, which attract pollinators and add an extra layer of seasonal interest. Its compact, mounding form (typically 1.5 metres high and wide when mature) makes it suitable for borders, containers, or as a statement shrub in mixed beds.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Pieris Forest Flame prefers moist, well-drained acidic soil and thrives in part shade, making it perfect for woodland-style gardens or areas with filtered sunlight. It’s a fantastic choice for regions where rhododendrons and camellias also grow well. Regular watering during dry spells and mulching to retain soil moisture will keep your pieris jap forest flame healthy and happy. Minimal pruning is needed—just trim after flowering to maintain shape and encourage lush new growth.
