How to Grow and Care for Phormium

Phormium plants thrive in full sun to part shade and are unfussy about soil, provided it’s well-drained. Once established, they require minimal care—just occasional water in extended dry spells and a light mulch annually. Phormium tolerates coastal conditions and urban pollution, making it one of the most versatile choices for New Zealand gardens. Pruning is rarely necessary, but you can easily remove any damaged leaves at the base for a tidy look.
