Phormium tenax

5 from 2 customers

Phormium tenax, commonly known as the NZ flax or Harakeke, is a flax plant that produces erect, green, sword-like leaves. Stems rise above the foliage in summer to bear twisted-looking flowers that result in black seed pods in autumn, and the nectar produced by the flowers attracts both birds and butterflies. Harakeke grows as a clump to about 2 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is a popular landscape option that is also often used to contrast with other plant colours. Mass planting on a bank not only provides an outstanding display but is also excellent for helping to stabilise the soil.

Features and Growing Conditions

Phormium Maori Maiden thrives in a range of conditions, making it a favourite for coastal gardens and exposed sites. It tolerates wind, salt, frost, and even periods of drought once established. Plant Maori Maiden in full sun or partial shade, and it will reward you with strong vigour and a tidy upright habit, usually reaching about 80–100cm. This flax is also exceptionally hardy, suited to most New Zealand climates. Enjoy its eye-catching foliage all year—no need for frequent pruning, just remove older leaves as needed.

Garden Uses of Phormium Maori Maiden

This compact cultivar fits seamlessly into contemporary and native-themed gardens. Use Phormium Maori Maiden to accent pathways, create colourful contrast in mixed borders, or anchor a low-maintenance planting scheme. It’s a natural choice for modern pots and planters, making entrances pop. Maori Maiden also works beautifully in mass plantings, where its vivid tones create waves of colour and texture. Its strong root system helps stabilise slopes, so it’s a practical plant for erosion control, too. For even more drama, pair Phormium Maori Maiden with other striking varieties like Phormium 'Maori Chief' and Phormium 'Rainbow Maiden'.

Caring for Your Phormium Maori Maiden

Once established, Phormium Maori Maiden is a low-effort garden companion. Water regularly when first planted, letting the soil dry between watering. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser to encourage strong new growth. While this flax rarely suffers from pests or diseases, keep an eye out for snails on young plants. If you're designing a native garden or looking for alternatives, explore traditional options such as Phormium tenax, the iconic New Zealand flax with taller, robust foliage. For even more visual variety, try unique cultivars like Phormium 'Stripy Mist' or Phormium 'Veneer'.

Why Choose Phormium Maori Maiden?

Phormium Maori Maiden combines dramatic colour and compact form in a flax that’s easy to grow and exceptionally tough. Whether you’re creating a low-maintenance landscape, modern outdoor pots, or a vibrant native garden, this cultivar offers performance and beauty all year. Its adaptability means it suits everything from windswept coastal gardens to urban courtyards. Pair Maori Maiden with other flaxes for diverse foliage displays or use as a standout specimen in your landscape. For landscape inspiration, take a look at related varieties including Phormium 'Maori Chief' and Phormium 'Veneer'.
