Why Choose Palmers Hydrangea for Your Garden

Palmers hydrangea are renowned for their large, mophead or lacecap flowers which can appear all summer and into autumn. Their impressive floral displays can range from classic powder blues and soft pinks to deep reds and whites, depending on the variety and your soil’s pH. These shrubs thrive in partial shade and well-drained soil and are ideal for adding striking colour to foundation plantings, borders, or containers.

Hydrangeas are also an excellent pick for cut flower arrangements and drying. Their blooms can be enjoyed both indoors and out, making them an especially rewarding addition to your garden.

Popular Hydrangea Varieties for Kiwi Gardens

While the classic palmers hydrangea features prominently, there are numerous outstanding cultivars suitable for New Zealand gardens. Some top choices include:

Planting and Caring for Palmers Hydrangea

Plant your palmers hydrangea in well-drained, fertile soil, ideally enriched with organic matter. Morning sun and afternoon shade create the perfect conditions, helping preserve bloom colour and leaf health. Mulch generously to retain moisture and keep roots cool during warmer months. Regular watering during dry spells, along with an annual pruning after flowering, will keep your hydrangeas lush and full of life.

For enhancing flower colour, consider adjusting soil pH. More acidic soils favour blue hues, while alkaline conditions encourage pink blooms. Whichever you choose, palmers hydrangea remains an easy-care favourite, rewarding you with spectacular, season-long displays with minimal fuss.
