Why Choose Ornamental Grasses?

Ornamental grasses are loved for their ability to soften hard lines, sway gracefully in the wind, and require minimal care once established. Most varieties are drought-tolerant, cope well with exposed coastal sites, and thrive in a range of soils common throughout New Zealand. As efficient ground covers, they suppress weeds, reduce erosion, and create habitats for garden wildlife. Many gardeners use them for mass plantings, low hedges, container displays, or as accent plants dotted through mixed borders.

Popular Ornamental Grasses Available

At our nursery, you’ll find a curated range of ornamental grasses for sale NZ, perfect for every planting scheme. Some customer favourites include striking blue tones, flowing bronze shades, and subtle greens:

How to Use Ornamental Grasses in Your Garden

Ornamental grasses can be mass-planted for striking drifts of colour or mixed into perennial borders for texture and movement. Their drought and wind tolerance make them ideal for coastal gardens and exposed sites across NZ. For year-round interest, combine contrasting heights, tones, and leaf shapes. Try pairing the steel hues of Juncus Blue Dart (Blue Rush) with the bronze tones of Carex flagellifera Red for a dramatic effect. Use tough, evergreen varieties like Lomandra White Sands and Carex flagellifera Green in driveways, foundation plantings, or even large pots.

Sure, Ficus benjamina 'Variegata' and Azara microphylla are crowd-pleasers, but Boysenberry 'Mapua', Callistemon 'Green John' (Dwarf Bottlebrush), and Lavender 'The Queen' are quietly making a name for themselves.
