Why Choose Orange Climbing Plants?

Orange climbing plants are an excellent choice for gardeners who want year-round interest or seasonal bursts of blossom. Their vivid flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, helping you support local biodiversity. Climbers are also ideal for covering unsightly fences, creating privacy screens, or training over archways to frame garden entrances in a spectacular way.

Popular Types of Orange Climbing Plants for NZ Gardens

One of the most sought-after orange climbing plants is Pyrostegia venusta, also known as Flame Vine. This vigorous evergreen climber produces clusters of trumpet-shaped, bright orange flowers throughout mid to late summer. It thrives in full sun, tolerates coastal conditions, and brings a tropical look to your patio or fence line.

While Pyrostegia venusta is a classic true climber, several other orange-flowered plants are popular for sunny spots. Consider the stunning Kniphofia Dwarf Orange (Torchlily), which produces grassy clumps topped with glowing orange flower spikes. While not a climber in the traditional sense, Kniphofia works brilliantly when planted alongside climbers, adding an extra pop of orange at ground level.

Companion Orange Plants to Pair with Climbers

Pairing climbers with perennials and shrubs boasting orange hues can amplify the effect in your landscape. Murraya paniculata (Orange Jessamine) is a versatile shrub with fragrant, creamy-white flowers and orange berry-like fruits, making it an excellent backdrop for orange climbers.

Daylilies like Hemerocallis 'Orange Star' offer intensely coloured blooms from early summer and work well in mixed borders with climbers twisting through for vertical interest. For smaller spaces or containers, Abutilon Orange adds lantern-like flowers, perfect for punctuating your garden design with even more fiery tones.

Growing and Caring Tips for Orange Climbers

To get the best from your orange climbing plants, choose a sheltered, sunny location and prepare the soil with plenty of compost or organic matter. Provide strong support structures for climbing varieties like Pyrostegia venusta, as their rapid growth can quickly cover trellises or fences. Water young plants regularly in their first season and feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser each spring.

Remember to prune after flowering to keep climbers tidy and encourage lush new growth. Most orange-flowered species are relatively hardy but appreciate protection from strong winds and heavy frosts, especially in southern parts of New Zealand.

Find Your Perfect Orange Climbing Plants

Whether you’re planning a bold feature wall with Pyrostegia venusta or creating mixed plantings with Kniphofia Dwarf Orange (Torchlily), Murraya paniculata (Orange Jessamine), Hemerocallis 'Orange Star', or Abutilon Orange, there’s an orange plant for every garden style. Explore these options and bring vibrant, sunlit colour to your outdoor spaces all year round.
