Olive trees, with their silvery-green foliage and graceful structure, create a dense, evergreen screen that’s perfectly suited to New Zealand gardens. Not only do they offer year-round privacy, but they also provide the bonus of edible fruit and a Mediterranean twist to your landscape. Why Choose an Olive Tree Hedge in NZ?

An olive tree hedge NZ gardeners trust is a fantastic alternative to traditional hedging plants. Their ornamental leaves bring shimmer and movement to the garden, and their tidy growth responds well to clipping. Olive hedges provide fast-growing privacy and act as excellent windbreaks. Because olive trees thrive in many New Zealand climates, they’re surprisingly hardy even for coastal or inland sites.

If you’re after a hedge with visual character, olives are ideal. Their gnarled trunks and smooth, evergreen leaves give gardens architectural interest across all seasons. Plus, as your hedge matures, you’ll have the added delight of harvesting small crops of olives for home curing or pressing.

Best Olive Varieties for Hedges

Choosing the right olive variety is key for planting a dense, healthy olive tree hedge NZ-wide. Compact-growing types like Olive Moraiolo are a reliable choice, flourishing in local conditions and forming thick screens. The Olive J2 is another standout for hedging, with its attractive foliage and proven reliability in New Zealand’s changing weather.

Set your plants out roughly 1 to 1.5 metres apart for the quickest, densest result. Regular clipping will encourage bushy growth and help maintain a tidy, uniform hedge.

Planting and Caring for Olive Hedges

Olive trees appreciate a sunny, free-draining site. Work a little compost into each hole for improved root health, and avoid areas that stay wet in winter. For the first season, water your young olives in dry spells until they’re established. Easy to grow, olives require little ongoing care—just an annual feed in early spring and a light trim after summer to shape your hedge and encourage new growth.

A well-cared-for olive tree hedge NZ gardeners find will reward you for decades, withstanding everything from salt winds to droughts.

Alternative Hedging Plants

While olive hedges are undeniably charming, you might also consider other locally-loved hedging plants for contrast or variety. For a lush, fast-growing native option, Pittosporum 'Oliver Twist' provides glossy foliage and year-round privacy. If you prefer a more contemporary look, Corokia Pounamu and Corokia cheesemanii offer unique textures and proven performance in tough New Zealand conditions.

Create a Timeless Olive Tree Hedge

No matter where you’re gardening in NZ, an olive tree hedge delivers structure, beauty, and even a touch of the Mediterranean to your home. Whether planted as a formal boundary or an informal screen, olives will make a lasting impression—and you’ll savor both the privacy and the harvest for years to come.
