Olive Manzanillo

Olea Manzanillo is a variety of Olive tree grown for its high yields of medium sized fruit. They are dark purple-black when mature in autumn and originate from white-cream flowers in summer. The foliage comprises grey-green leaves which are held on rigid branches as it grows to 3 m tall and the same wide. Olea Manzanillo is one of the more popular varieties and is often grown for fruit production. This Olive also makes for an impressive specimen tree and is useful for screening, using as a windbreak, or being trimming either into a hedge or for topiary.

Why Plant an Olea Manzanillo Olive?

Renowned for its adaptability, the Olea Manzanillo olive tree thrives across many New Zealand regions. It is prized for its heavy crops, self-fertility, and resistance to common olive diseases. The fruit ripens through early autumn and is well-suited for both green and black olive processing, making this variety a favourite among home chefs and growers. The lush, silvery foliage also adds evergreen beauty to gardens, making the Manzanillo both an ornamental and productive feature in your landscape.

Best Uses for Olea Manzanillo Olive Fruit

The Manzanillo olive is famous for its dual-purpose fruit. Picked green, the olives are meaty and mild, excellent for brining and antipasto platters. When allowed to fully ripen and darken, the fruit yields a high-quality oil with a delicate, buttery flavour. Many home gardeners use the Manzanillo olive for classic Mediterranean recipes, including tapenade, salads, and artisan bread. Its reliable cropping and generous yields make it an ideal candidate for those wanting to enjoy homegrown olives year-round.

Growing Tips for Manzanillo Olives in New Zealand

The Olea Manzanillo olive is well-suited to a range of garden situations, from coastal plots to urban backyards. Choose a sunny, free-draining location and protect young trees from frosts in colder regions. Manzanillo olives tolerate dry periods once established, though regular watering during the summer months will encourage the best fruit set. They don’t require much feeding—an annual top-dressing with well-rotted compost in early spring is often all that’s needed. Olive trees also respond well to pruning, allowing you to keep the size manageable for harvesting and shaping.

Explore More Olive and Fruit Tree Varieties

While the Olea Manzanillo olive is an exceptional all-rounder, you might also consider growing complementary varieties to enhance pollination and extend your harvest. Popular options include Olive Ascolano, renowned for its large, sweet fruit, or Olive Barnea, a favourite for high-yielding olive oil production. For heritage charm, Olive El Greco offers a classic Mediterranean flavour, while Olive Frantoio and Olive J5 suit both gourmet and landscape needs.

If you’re seeking more variety in your home orchard, consider pairing olives with an Apple Fuji (Fuji Apple), Apple Baujade (Baujade Apple), Pear Concorde (Concorde Pear), or even a sun-loving Avocado 'Esther' or Cherry Rainier for a bounty of fresh produce.
