Native to Greece and now popular in New Zealand home gardens, this compact and resilient variety is ideal if you’re seeking a productive olive tree that thrives in a range of local conditions. Olea Koroneiki is a variety of Olive tree grown for its high yields of small fruit. The fruit are often squeezed to produce an oil with a distinct, fruity taste or they can be eaten fresh during autumn. The foliage comprises grey-green leaves which are held on rigid branches as it grows to 3 m tall and the same wide. Olea Koroneiki is often grown for fruit production, but also makes for an impressive specimen tree. This olive is useful for screening, using as a windbreak, or being trimming either into a hedge or for topiary.

Why Choose Olea Koroneiki for Your Garden?

Olea koroneiki offers several advantages for New Zealand gardeners. This self-fertile tree is widely admired for its adaptability, tolerating coastal winds, dry spells, and light frosts once established. Its relatively small and dense habit makes it perfect for smaller gardens and even container growing. Whether you want to create a Mediterranean-style landscaping statement or boost your food garden with a functional and attractive fruiting tree, Olive Koroneiki is a dependable choice.

Olea Koroneiki Growing Tips

For best results, plant your Olea koroneiki in a sunny, well-drained spot. Olive trees prefer poor, rocky soils over rich or waterlogged ones and benefit from regular watering during their first year. Once established, they are drought-tolerant. Prune lightly in winter to maintain shape and airflow, and feed annually with controlled-release fertiliser to encourage healthy new growth and bountiful fruit.

If you’re interested in exploring more olive varieties that suit New Zealand’s climate, consider Olive Barnea, known for its vigour and versatility, or the striking Olive El Greco, which also produces high-quality oil and fruit.

Harvest and Uses

Olea koroneiki olives ripen in late autumn and are usually harvested when they’re green-black. They are famous for their high oil yield, robust flavour, and low bitterness—a winning combination for cold-pressed olive oil enthusiasts. You can also cure these small olives for table use, enjoying their unique taste and dense, aromatic flesh. Homegrown olive oil is perfect for dressings, marinades, and drizzling over Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

Curious about other trees to complement your olive collection? Discover the productive Olive Ascolano, or pair your tree with stone fruit favourites like Apricot 'Gold Bar' or Plum Burbank for a diverse, fruitful orchard.

Olea Koroneiki Pollination Partners

While Olea koroneiki is self-fertile, planting it alongside other cultivars can help increase your overall yield. Consider adding Olive Frantoio or Olive J5 for a resilient and productive olive grove. Growing a mix of olives also enhances cross-pollination, oil blends, and extends your harvest season.

Whether you’re establishing a new home orchard or expanding an existing one, Olea koroneiki brings Mediterranean flavour and reliable performance to New Zealand gardens. Browse our wide selection of fruit trees, from Nashi Shinseiki to Apple Autento (Autento Apple), and enjoy fresher, healthier produce right at home.
