olea frantoio

Olea Frantoio, commonly known as Olive Frantoio, is one of the world’s most celebrated olive varieties, prized for its vigorous growth and exceptional oil production. This evergreen tree hails from Italy and has become a favourite among New Zealand gardeners for its attractive silvery foliage, rich harvests, and adaptability to our unique climate. Whether you’re seeking to produce your own olive oil or enjoy a stunning structural specimen in your garden, Olea Frantoio offers beauty and bounty with minimal fuss.

Olive Frantoio

Olive Frantoio carries large fruit that are often squeezed to produce an oil with a distinct, pungent, yet fruity taste or they can be eaten fresh. The fruit are dark purple-black when mature in autumn and originate from white-cream flowers in summer. The foliage comprises grey-green leaves as it grows to 3 m tall and the same wide. Olive Frantoio is one of the more popular varieties of olive tree and is often grown for fruit production. It also makes for an impressive specimen and is useful for screening, using as a windbreak, or being trimming either into a hedge or for topiary.

Why Choose Olea Frantoio?

Renowned for its consistently high-quality fruit, the Olea Frantoio is a top choice for olive oil enthusiasts. Its small to medium-sized olives are packed with flavour, delivering fruity, aromatic oil with hints of artichoke and almonds. The tree itself is fast-growing, tolerant of coastal conditions, and responds well to regular pruning, allowing you to shape it to suit your space. Olea Frantoio is self-fertile but will yield even bigger harvests with a compatible pollinator nearby.

Growing Tips for Olive Frantoio in New Zealand

Olive Frantoio is perfectly suited to New Zealand gardens, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and resilient to the occasional chilly winter. For best results, plant your tree in a sheltered position away from prevailing winds. Water young trees regularly during establishment and feed each spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and fruit production. Regular, light pruning after harvest helps maintain a manageable size and encourages dense, fruiting growth.

Using Olive Frantoio in the Home Garden

With its upright, spreading habit, the Olea Frantoio makes a wonderful patio or specimen tree and is well-suited for hedges or olive groves. Beyond oil extraction, the olives can be cured for eating, adding a Mediterranean flair to any harvest platter. The finely-textured, silvery-green leaves remain lush throughout the year, creating a striking backdrop to other fruiting plants.

For diversity in your olive orchard, consider pairing Olea Frantoio with other varieties such as Olive Barnea, Olive El Greco, or Olive Koroneiki. These combinations not only increase fruit set but also expand the flavour profiles of your homemade olive oils and cured olives.
