Why Grow Olea Europaea Picholine?

The Olive Picholine tree is well-loved for its vigorous growth and resilience. It thrives in a range of New Zealand conditions, provided it enjoys full sun and free-draining soil. Olea europaea picholine trees are valued for their early fruiting—typically seeing substantial yields just three to five years after planting. The medium-sized olives are traditionally picked green, retaining a satisfying crunch and an elegantly salty, nutty flavour perfect for antipasto platters and salads.

For those interested in making olive oil, Picholine is prized for its aromatic character, offering a peppery, well-balanced oil with a fruity aroma. Home pressers and commercial producers appreciate its moderate-to-high oil content and relatively straightforward processing.

Ornamental Qualities

In addition to their productive capacity, Olea europaea picholine trees are striking landscape pieces. Their silvery-green leaves, rugged trunks, and compact growth habit make them attractive as specimen trees, hedges, or even in containers. They suit both formal gardens and relaxed, Mediterranean-style landscapes.

Planting and Care Tips

Picholine olive trees prefer warm, sunny spots protected from harsh winds. Well-drained soil is essential for healthy roots. Cuttings or young trees should be watered deeply and regularly until established. Once mature, Olea europaea picholine is notably drought-tolerant, though supplementary water during dry spells enhances fruit yield and quality. Minimal pruning is required—just enough to maintain shape and allow sunlight to penetrate the center.

To diversify your olive grove, consider combining Olea europaea picholine with other excellent varieties like Olive Ascolano, Olive Barnea, Olive El Greco, Olive Frantoio, or Olive J5. Mixing varieties often improves pollination and, ultimately, ensures better yields across the orchard.

Harvest and Uses

Olive Picholine is favoured for its versatility. Harvest the fruit green for classic French-style table olives, or allow them to fully ripen on the tree for oil pressing. Home picklers and curing enthusiasts find Picholine olives ideal for brining, providing firm texture and robust taste. The olives also lend themselves to stuffing and use in gourmet dishes.

If you're interested in expanding your edible landscape, complement your olive selection with heritage fruits like Peach Golden Queen, Apple Kingston Black (Kingston Black), Plum Pernel, Apple Ballarat (Ballarat Apple), or Pear Concorde (Concorde Pear).

Start Your Picholine Olive Journey

Whether enjoyed as a specimen tree or as a centrepiece of your home orchard, Olea europaea picholine stands out for its robust health, exceptional fruit, and ornamental value. Start your own Mediterranean garden and discover the pleasure of homegrown olives with this classic and easy-to-grow variety.
