Olive Manzanillo

Olea Manzanillo is a variety of Olive tree grown for its high yields of medium sized fruit. They are dark purple-black when mature in autumn and originate from white-cream flowers in summer. The foliage comprises grey-green leaves which are held on rigid branches as it grows to 3 m tall and the same wide. Olea Manzanillo is one of the more popular varieties and is often grown for fruit production. This Olive also makes for an impressive specimen tree and is useful for screening, using as a windbreak, or being trimming either into a hedge or for topiary.

Why Choose Olea Europaea Manzanillo for Your Garden

When you choose an Olea europaea manzanillo, you’re investing in a proven performer with a strong track record in both commercial groves and backyard gardens. Known for its medium to large fruit, Manzanillo is perfect for table olives due to its mildly fruity flavour and firm texture. Home gardeners love its decorative shape and robust constitution, while olive enthusiasts prize it for an abundant olive oil yield with a delicate, buttery taste. The Manzanillo olive tree grows well in New Zealand, tolerating coastal conditions, light frosts, and extended dry spells, making it an ideal choice for a range of climates.

Planting and Care for Success

Olea europaea manzanillo thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. When planting, select a warm, protected site—ideally facing north—for optimal fruiting. While olives are drought-tolerant once established, regular deep watering during dry spells will help them produce more fruit. Prune during late winter or early spring to encourage an open shape and allow light penetration. Mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture, and feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring.

Cross-pollination can boost yields, so consider pairing Manzanillo with other olive varieties like Olive Ascolano, Olive Barnea, or Olive Frantoio for a truly productive grove.

Harvest and Uses

Manzanillo olives can be picked green or left to ripen black on the tree. Green fruit can be brined for a classic table olive, while black olives yield a mellow, golden oil perfect for salads and drizzling over roasted vegetables. Olive Manzanillo is also an excellent choice for home curing experiments—try different brines and enjoy the unique flavour profiles! If you’re interested in other olive varieties for different uses, explore Olive El Greco or Olive J5 in your planting plans.

Perfect Pairings for Productive Edible Gardens

Olea europaea manzanillo fits beautifully in mixed orchard plantings. It works well alongside other Mediterranean and fruiting favourites. Apple lovers will enjoy growing Apple Waltz (Waltz Apple) or Apple Ginger Gold (Ginger Gold Apple), while those looking for more variety might consider Avocado 'Reed', Plum Mirabelle, or Feijoa 'White Goose'.
