olea el greco

Olea el Greco, often known as Olive El Greco, is an exceptional olive tree variety prized for its elegant appearance, compact growth, and reliable fruit production. This versatile olive is widely loved by New Zealand gardeners for its resilience and Mediterranean charm, making it a top choice for home orchards, landscaping, or even as an attractive potted feature. Renowned for its ornamental appeal and high-quality fruit, Olea el Greco is perfectly suited to Kiwi gardens, whether you’re starting your olive grove or looking to diversify your edible landscape.

Olive El Greco

Olive El Greco is grown for its high yields of quality fruit. It carries large fruit that are often squeezed to produce an oil with a distinct, fruity aroma. The fruit are dark purple-black when mature in autumn and originate from white-cream flowers borne in summer. The foliage comprises grey-green leaves which are held on rigid branches as it grows to 2.5 m tall and the same wide. The El Greco Olive tree is one of the more popular varieties and is often grown for fruit production. This olive also makes for an impressive specimen tree and is useful for screening, using as a windbreak, or being trimming either into a hedge or for topiary.

Why Choose Olea El Greco?

Olea el Greco offers several advantages for gardeners and growers. Its compact, upright growth habit makes it ideal for smaller spaces, containers, or as a hedge. This variety thrives in New Zealand’s climate, tolerating coastal winds and periods of dryness, provided it is planted in free-draining soil with plenty of sun. With regular pruning and care, you can enjoy a tidy, sculptural tree that produces a reliable harvest of small to medium-sized olives, perfect for home curing or pressing for oil.

Planting and Caring for Olea El Greco

Olea el Greco prefers a sunny location and well-draining soil. When planting, ensure good air circulation and allow enough space if adding multiple trees. Mulch the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the trunk. Water deeply during dry spells, especially in the first two years, then allow the tree to develop some drought tolerance. An annual feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring will encourage healthy growth and fruiting.

Pruning is best done in late winter to shape the tree and promote airflow. Maintaining an open structure reduces pest and disease problems, making care easier throughout the year.

Harvest and Uses

Olive El Greco produces olives that are smaller than some other varieties but highly valued for their rich, classic flavour. Harvest typically occurs in autumn when the fruit changes colour from green to purple-black. These olives are excellent for curing at home and can yield a high-quality oil.

Homegrown olives, including Olea el Greco, bring a delicious taste of the Mediterranean to your kitchen. Try mixing this variety with others like Olive Frantoio, Olive Ascolano, or Olive Barnea for a diverse range of flavours and oil blends.

Complementary Olive Varieties

Expand your olive collection with other popular options such as Olive Kalamata, renowned for its bold taste, or Olive Koroneiki, which is favoured for premium oil production. For those seeking diversity, Olive J5 is also a reliable performer in New Zealand gardens.

If you’re passionate about Mediterranean-style gardening, consider adding figs like Fig Lesa or Fig Black Mission, which also thrive in similar growing conditions. Those with a broader interest in fruit trees might want to explore Apple Red Delicious (Red Delicious Apple) for a sweet, crisp harvest.
