What is NZ Mountain Flax (Phormium cookianum)?

Phormium cookianum—often called NZ mountain flax or Wharariki—is a perennial, evergreen flax native to New Zealand. It forms softer, drooping fans of sword-shaped leaves, typically lighter and more flexible than its cousin, Phormium tenax (common flax or harakeke). In early summer, it sends up tall flower stalks adorned with yellow-green, nectar-rich tubular blooms that attract native birds such as tui and bellbirds.

How to Grow NZ Mountain Flax

Mountain flax thrives in a variety of conditions, from coastal sites to alpine gardens. It prefers well-drained soil and a sunny to partly shaded location but is tolerant of wind, salt spray, drought, and frost. For mass planting, space plants about one metre apart. Water regularly when establishing, but once established, NZ mountain flax needs little maintenance besides an occasional tidy-up of spent leaves.

Landscape Uses for Mountain Flax

NZ mountain flax makes a stunning feature plant in contemporary and native landscapes. Its flowing leaves create movement and softness, beautifully complementing bold forms and textures such as Phormium 'Evening Glow' or Astelia 'Westland'. Use mountain flax for:

For striking contrasts or mixed groupings, consider pairing it with compact flax cultivars like Phormium 'Green Dwarf' or Phormium 'Surfer'.

Related Flaxes and Similar Alternatives

Expand your planting palette by exploring other attractive flax varieties. Phormium 'Jester' offers lively pink and green tones for a bold statement, while Phormium 'Emerald Gem' stands out with its rich emerald-green foliage and compact form. If you’re considering alternatives with a similar look but different textures, the strappy blue and green Dianella varieties—like Dianella Blutopia, Dianella Lucia, Dianella Florero, and Dianella 'King Alfred'—are excellent for underplanting or low-maintenance groundcovers.

Care and Long-term Maintenance

NZ mountain flax is a low-care plant, needing only a trim of dead leaves each year to stay tidy. Every few years, larger clumps can be divided in early spring to rejuvenate older plants and create more specimens for your garden. Keep an eye out for pests like flax snails or mealybugs, though they are rarely a major issue.

Invite native wildlife into your garden and celebrate New Zealand’s botanical heritage by planting NZ mountain flax. With its unmatched adaptability and grace, it’s easy to see why Wharariki holds a special place in Kiwi landscapes.
