Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Why Choose an NZ Cherry Blossom Tree?

The NZ cherry blossom tree has become a favourite in gardens, parks, and landscapes throughout the country. With graceful branches blanketed in vibrant blooms from late winter through spring, these ornamental trees create a focal point that stops visitors in their tracks. Their compact habit suits urban courtyards as well as larger country gardens, while their seasonal interest brings beauty to even the smallest spaces.

Some cherry blossom varieties, like the acclaimed Prunus Accolade, are prized for profuse pink flowers and reliable performance in New Zealand's varied climates. These trees not only look gorgeous but attract pollinators such as bees, helping to support local biodiversity.

Where to Plant Your NZ Cherry Blossom Tree

Cherry blossom trees thrive in full sun and well-drained soil. When choosing a spot, select an area that offers shelter from harsh winds, which can damage the delicate blooms. These trees are highly adaptable and will perform beautifully in most New Zealand regions—including cooler climates, provided they are planted in a frost-free position.

If you are considering a fruiting cherry, you might enjoy the sweet harvest from varieties such as Cherry Rainier, Cherry Dawson, and Cherry Modesto. These cherries not only add spring interest with their blossoms but also offer delicious fruit during summer.

Plant Care Tips for Cherry Blossom Success

Looking after an NZ cherry blossom tree is straightforward. When first planted, water regularly to establish strong roots, then reduce to occasional watering during very dry periods. Mulching in late winter helps conserve moisture and protect roots. Pruning is best done in late summer to encourage a tidy shape and avoid disease.

While most ornamental varieties rarely have pest or disease issues, it pays to keep an eye on leaf spot or aphids. Good airflow, correct spacing, and avoiding overhead watering help mitigate most concerns.

Blossom Varieties to Consider

When choosing your ideal NZ cherry blossom tree, explore varieties such as the beloved Prunus Accolade, known for its semi-double, clear pink flowers. If you’re tempted by the best of both worlds, consider fruiting cherry trees such as Cherry Rainier or the rich-flavoured Cherry Dawson. For something unique, Cherry Griotella Frumi offers ornamental blossoms combined with tart fruit ideal for preserves.

Enhance Your Landscape with NZ Cherry Blossom Trees

Whether you want a stunning avenue, a spring showpiece, or a productive fruiting cherry, our range offers something for every gardener.
