Phormium tenax

5 from 2 customers

Phormium tenax, commonly known as the NZ flax or Harakeke, is a flax plant that produces erect, green, sword-like leaves. Stems rise above the foliage in summer to bear twisted-looking flowers that result in black seed pods in autumn, and the nectar produced by the flowers attracts both birds and butterflies. Harakeke grows as a clump to about 2 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is a popular landscape option that is also often used to contrast with other plant colours. Mass planting on a bank not only provides an outstanding display but is also excellent for helping to stabilise the soil.

Why Choose the New Zealand Flax Plant?

The New Zealand flax plant (botanical name: Phormium) thrives in a wide range of garden conditions, from wild coastal winds to city courtyards. It handles poor soils, salt spray, and dry periods without fuss, making it a favourite with gardeners seeking impact without excessive care. The strong, sword-shaped foliage comes in a stunning variety of colours, from classic green to bronze and red, perfect for weaving in interest throughout your landscape.

Many gardeners love New Zealand flax plants for their unique versatility. They're ideal for mass planting on banks and slopes, adding drama to poolside gardens, or serving as statement specimens in pots. These plants are perfect for eco-sourcing and sustainable landscaping, as they're both hardy and drought-tolerant once established.

Varieties of New Zealand Flax

There are several outstanding New Zealand flax varieties, each offering a unique look and growth habit. The classic Phormium tenax is beloved for its tall, robust green blades and striking flower spikes, which attract tui and bellbirds to the garden. For something more compact, Phormium 'Green Dwarf' provides lush green foliage in a smaller footprint, ideal for pots or edging.

If you’re craving colour, consider Phormium 'Surfer Bronze', which features deep bronze tones and a slightly arching habit—perfect for planting in mixed perennial borders. Phormium 'Surfer' offers beautiful strappy leaves and a versatile size for many landscaping needs, while Phormium 'Velvet Underground' stuns with its rich, moody foliage, adding a contemporary touch to any design.

Planting and Care Tips

Establishing your New Zealand flax plant is simple. Choose a sunny or partly shaded site with well-drained soil. Flax tolerates harsh conditions but benefits from a little compost in the planting hole and regular watering during its first summer. Once established, these plants are famously tough, needing little more than the occasional tidy-up of older leaves and a top-up of mulch in spring. They're generally pest-resistant and seldom troubled by disease, making them a reliable, low-maintenance choice for New Zealand gardens.

Design Ideas with New Zealand Flax

The New Zealand flax plant is a designer’s dream. Try planting in clumps for instant curb appeal, dotting them through coastal gardens, or using smaller hybrids as contemporary alternatives to traditional grasses. Pair New Zealand flax with native flaxes, grasses, and flowering perennials for lush, wildlife-friendly displays. Their striking foliage works beautifully against natural stone, timber, and modern architecture.

Whether you’re after a statement specimen like Phormium tenax, the vivid shades of Phormium 'Surfer Bronze', or compact forms like Phormium 'Green Dwarf', there’s a New Zealand flax plant for every garden style. Discover how these charismatic natives can transform your outdoor spaces—adding beauty, resilience, and a touch of classic Kiwi flavour.
