What Is New Zealand Daphne?

While many gardeners think of daphne as the classic evergreen shrub prized for its sweet-scented clusters of flowers in winter and early spring, New Zealand daphne can refer both to the much-loved imported daphne varieties and our own native Pimelea species. Pimelea, often called New Zealand daphne, offers beautiful white, pink, or bluish blooms in compact clusters, making it ideal for rockeries, coastal gardens, or mass groundcover plantings. Pimelea prostrata 'Blue Peter', in particular, is prized for its low-growing habit, charming blue-tinged foliage, and eye-catching flowers that attract pollinators to the garden.

Top Daphne Varieties for New Zealand Gardens

If you’re searching for imported varieties to complement your native daphnes, consider these excellent options that are well-suited to our local growing conditions. Each offers distinctive fragrance, leaf colour, and garden uses:

Daphne transatlantica features ivory-pink blooms over a long flowering period, thriving in both sun and part shade with outstanding scent. Daphne Burkwoodii (Burkwood Daphne) is a robust hybrid with semi-evergreen foliage and blushing pale pink flowers, perfect for low-maintenance shrub borders. Daphne Carol Mackie is admired for its creamy-variegated leaves and subtle fragrance, making it a lovely accent in mixed beds or formal gardens. Daphne Jacqueline Postill is famed for its spicy winter scent and upright habit, providing colour and fragrance when much of the garden is dormant.

Growing and Caring for New Zealand Daphne

Most daphne species, including both Pimelea and imported types, appreciate a sheltered position with partial sun and well-drained soil. Avoid overly wet locations and enrich your soil with organic matter for best results. Minimise root disturbance during planting and mulch to protect shallow root systems. Once established, New Zealand daphne is remarkably resilient and responds well to gentle pruning after flowering to maintain a compact shape.

Enhance Your Garden With New Zealand Daphne

Whether you want the native appeal of Pimelea prostrata 'Blue Peter' or a fragrant border-filled with imported beauties like Daphne Burkwoodii (Burkwood Daphne), New Zealand daphne adds four-season interest and charm to any Kiwi garden. Discover the perfect daphne to suit your spaces and enjoy their delightful blooms and subtle perfume year after year.
