Growing up to 4 m wide and 2 m high, it’s perfect for fences, banks, or walls. Pohuehue tolerates wind, salt spray, and dry conditions once established. Why Choose Native Climbing Plants in New Zealand?

Native climbing plants NZ gardeners plant are essential for promoting local ecosystems. These plants are uniquely adapted to thrive in New Zealand’s diverse conditions, so they're typically lower maintenance and more resilient to pests than exotic varieties. Natives also provide food and shelter for local wildlife, contributing to a healthy, lively garden.

Popular Native Climbing Plants NZ

One stunning native climber is the Tecomanthe speciosa, a rare and beautiful vine featuring clusters of creamy-green to pink trumpet-shaped flowers. It grows well in partial shade and is perfect for adding visual interest to pergolas or fences.

Another favourite is Metrosideros carminea, also known as ‘Crimson Vine’ or 'Akakura'. This vigorous climber displays bright red blossoms in spring and early summer, attracting nectar-feeding birds and making a vibrant statement in any outdoor space.

While not all groundcovers are vigorous climbers, some, like Pimelea mimosa and Fuchsia procumbens (Creeping Fuchsia), can be trained to gently scramble up low supports or tumble over retaining walls. These ground-hugging natives are perfect for adding a layered look under taller climbing species or filling gaps in shade-dappled corners.

If you are interested in expanding beyond strictly native plants, Ficus pumila (Creeping Fig) is another excellent choice. While not native, it’s a popular climber perfect for lush green walls or covering unsightly structures quickly.

Tips for Growing Native Climbers

When adding native climbing plants NZ wide, site selection is key. Most natives prefer a sheltered position with some dappled shade and well-drained soil. Provide a sturdy trellis, fence, or arbor for support. Wire frames or garden netting can also help guide young vines as they establish.

Water new plantings regularly as they get established, then reduce moisture once growth takes off (most natives dislike soggy feet). Prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage bushiness, and mulch well to keep roots cool and weed competition low.
