Native beech trees are a treasured part of New Zealand's natural heritage, offering beauty, shade, and essential ecosystem benefits to gardens, parks, and wild landscapes alike. Renowned for their resilience and diversity, New Zealand's native beeches (Nothofagaceae family) thrive throughout the country, from lowland forests to high alpine slopes. Whether you're seeking to restore a patch of native bush, create a shelterbelt, or simply appreciate the distinctive forms and foliage of these iconic trees, native beech trees make a valuable addition to any landscape.

Commonly known as Mountain Beech, this is a large, evergreen tree native to NZ. The foliage comprises small, dark green leaves which are held densely of short stems in fan-like sprays. Masses of tiny, red flowers are borne across the tree in spring. It grows with a broad and somewhat rounded habit to about 18 m tall and 6 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site that does not dry out. It is tolerant of frost and cool climates but does require wind protection while establishing. Mountain Beech makes for a lovely specimen in a larger garden or park, and is commonly added to native and revegetation plantings.
