How to Grow and Care for Nandina in NZ

Growing the nandina plant NZ-wide is straightforward. Choose a well-draining site with some sun, although these shrubs can cope with light shade. They tolerate dry spells once established, so they’re perfect for busy gardeners. Pruning isn’t essential, but a light trim can encourage bushier new growth. Add a slow-release fertiliser in spring and mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Nandinas can be grown in garden beds, pots, or even as a low-maintenance hedge.

Nandinas bring year-round interest, making them ideal for foundation planting, mixed borders, and modern courtyard designs. Their neat habit suits contemporary gardens, while their colour and movement fit perfectly with cottage or native NZ styles.
