Nandina Obsession

5 from 4 customers

Nandina 'Obsession' is a compact, evergreen shrub grown for its colourful foliage. New growth from spring through autumn is bright red and complements the older, dark green foliage beautifully. The red tones disappear as the foliage ages, but red tones will reappear through winter. This evergreen typically grows to 60 cm tall and the same width. Nandina 'Obsession' is a tidy plant, ideal for rock gardens, mass planting on a bank, container maintenance, adding to a border or mixed planting, or incorporating around outdoor living areas such as pools, or anywhere vibrant colour is desired.

Why Choose a Nandina Obsession Hedge?

Nandina 'Obsession' (also known as Obsession Heavenly Bamboo) stands apart thanks to its lush, upright form and spectacular foliage. Fresh growth emerges a fiery red, gradually maturing to deep green. In autumn, you'll see warm, ruby tones return, providing year-round colour contrast even when many other shrubs are dull or dormant.

A nandina obsession hedge is highly adaptable, thriving in sun or partial shade, and tolerating a range of soil conditions including clay and sandy soils. Nandina 'Obsession' is drought tolerant once established, disease resistant, and rarely troubled by pests, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for beginner and experienced gardeners alike.

Best Uses for Nandina Obsession Hedges

The compact, upright habit of nandina obsession makes it perfect planted as a formal hedge or along pathways where neat lines are desired. It also works beautifully as a backdrop in mixed border plantings or as a specimen shrub in smaller gardens. Many New Zealanders use nandina obsession hedges to:

For a layered effect, combine your nandina obsession hedge with other attractive evergreen shrubs such as Nandina Gulf Stream, Nandina Richmond, or Nandina Blush.

How to Plant and Care for Nandina Obsession Hedge

To establish a dense, healthy nandina obsession hedge, plant shrubs around 50-70cm apart. Incorporate compost into the planting hole and water well until established. Although very resilient, nandina obsession benefits from a light trim in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and promote lush fresh growth. Apply slow-release fertiliser in spring for optimum colour.

For gardens with limited space, consider pairing with more compact varieties like Nandina 'Firepower' or the delicate Nandina 'Pygmaea' for a multi-dimensional look.

Plants to Pair with a Nandina Obsession Hedge

Nandina obsession’s changing foliage makes it a perfect partner for a range of companion shrubs and perennials. Try underplanting with Agapetes serpens (Pentapterygium serpens) for a delicate contrast, or mix with the bold Leptospermum Red Damask for vibrant, long-lasting colour. For springtime blooms, add Azalea 'Ming', or introduce architectural interest with Yucca elephantipes and scented blooms from Camellia Scentuous.

A nandina obsession hedge is a brilliant choice for Kiwi gardens seeking reliable, colourful structure and style across the seasons. With its striking foliage and toughness, you’ll enjoy the results for years to come.
