Why Choose Nandina 'Obsession'?

Nandina 'Obsession' is renowned for its bold, ever-changing colour. The new leaves emerge deep red, maturing to a lush green, before turning ruby red again in autumn and winter. Growing approximately 60–80cm high and wide, this dwarf sacred bamboo fits perfectly in both modern and traditional garden designs. It’s adaptable to a range of soil types, highly tolerant of drought once established, and naturally pest-free. If you want a non-invasive, non-spreading nandina with exceptional colour, 'Obsession' is your go-to choice.

Placement and Companion Plants

Plant Nandina 'Obsession' as a foundation shrub, low hedge, or in decorative containers for entryways and patios. Its compact growth makes it ideal for framing paths or tucked amongst perennial borders. For a harmonious garden palette, combine with other nandina varieties like Nandina Gulf Stream, Nandina Richmond, Nandina Blush, Nandina 'Firepower', and Nandina 'Pygmaea'. These all share similar requirements and provide a succession of colour and foliage interest.

Looking for striking texture contrasts? Pair with fine-leafed natives like Ozothamnus leptophyllus (Cottonwood), or enjoy softening the landscape with blooms from Camellia 'Early Pearly', Erica verticillata, or Hebe 'Amy'.

Caring for Your Nandina Obsession

Caring for nandina obsession is straightforward. Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil, and water regularly until established. Once growing, it withstands both drought and light frosts. Light pruning will encourage bushiness and more vivid new foliage. Mulching in spring will keep roots cool and reduce the need for watering. Every few years, thin out older canes at the base for optimal form and colour.
