Why Grow a Nagami Kumquat Tree?

The Nagami kumquat tree (Fortunella margarita 'Nagami') is one of the most popular and reliable kumquat varieties. Its small, glossy fruit pack a punch of citrus flavour: the aromatic peel is sweet, while the inner flesh brings a pleasant, tart zing. Unlike larger citrus like the Orange 'Newhall' or robust Grapefruit 'Morrison's Seedless', Nagami kumquats are at home tucked into smaller gardens or patio pots. These trees typically reach 2-3 metres in height, making them easy to protect from winter chill and perfect for urban spaces.

The Nagami kumquat tree’s versatility goes beyond looks. The fruit shines in fresh snacking, jams, marmalades, candied treats, or as a lively garnish. Nagami fruit ripen through late autumn into winter, often holding on the tree for weeks, providing a reliable supply when other homegrown citrus is scarce.

How to Grow Nagami Kumquat in New Zealand

Nagami kumquat trees excel across much of New Zealand. Choose a sunny, sheltered position—kumquats thrive in full sun but do best if shielded from harsh winds and heavy frosts. These trees enjoy rich, free-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Regular watering during dry spells and a citrus-specific fertiliser in spring help produce the tastiest, juiciest fruit.

In cooler regions, consider potting your Nagami kumquat tree. Containers allow you to move the plant under cover or into a greenhouse during cold snaps, while still enjoying the beauty and fragrance of the blossoms. Mulch well in summer and feed with a controlled-release citrus fertiliser for lush growth.

Discover Other Unique Kumquats and Citrus

The Nagami kumquat tree is the classic favourite, but kumquat lovers might also enjoy expanding their collection with our Kumquat 'Meiwa' (Cumquat Meiwa), prized for its sweeter fruit and rounder shape, or the striking Kumquat 'Blush' (Blush Kumquat). For an ornamental and zesty twist, try Kumquat 'Calamondin' (Calamondín o Kumquat), an exceptional cross for pots and conservatories.

If you’re building a citrus grove, be sure to explore relatives such as Mandarin 'Encore', Mandarin 'Burgess Scarlet', and the richly flavoured Orange 'Fukumoto'.
