Why Gardenia 'Fragrant Star' Is the Most Fragrant Gardenia

Many gardenias are famous for their aroma, but Gardenia 'Fragrant Star' is in a class of its own. Its creamy, star-shaped flowers emit an intoxicating fragrance from late spring to autumn. Gardenia 'Fragrant Star' is not only the most fragrant gardenia but also remarkably resilient—perfect for New Zealand's temperate climate. This gardenia thrives in semi-shaded areas, making it an adaptable addition to borders, woodland gardens, or as a striking potted feature.

Enhancing Your Garden With Gardenia 'Fragrant Star'

Position Gardenia 'Fragrant Star' near windows, walkways, or outdoor living areas to maximize its scent. With glossy green leaves and a neat growth habit, it provides year-round interest and a lush backdrop for other flowering plants. If you're planning a fragrant garden, consider combining with Gardenia radicans for groundcover or edging. Pairing with other scented shrubs like Gardenia Veitchii and Gardenia Professor Pucci creates layers of aroma and texture.

Care Tips for Gardenia 'Fragrant Star'

For optimum fragrance and flower production, plant in well-draining, acidic soil and keep roots moist but not soggy. Gardenias prefer filtered sunlight, shelter from strong winds, and regular feeding. Mulching helps preserve moisture and keeps roots cool. Pruning lightly after flowering will encourage new growth and more blooms. If you're seeking more options for scented shrubs or wish to complement your gardenia, consider Gardenia Lace Lady or the tropical-toned Gardenia Golden Magic.

Companion Planting Ideas

Gardenia 'Fragrant Star' pairs beautifully with shade-loving, acid soil companions such as Azalea 'Nak Winter Green', Rhododendron 'Greers Pink', and Hydrangea 'Little Lime'. For textural contrast, add silver-toned foliage like Hebe pinguifolia Pagei or the striking Melicytus crassifolius (Thick-Leaved Porcupine Plant).
