What is a Mop Top Hydrangea?

The term “mop top hydrangea” describes varieties of Hydrangea macrophylla with large, ball-shaped clusters of flowers—often referred to as “mopheads.” These showy blossoms can range in colour from striking pinks to deep blues, depending on soil pH. The mop top hydrangea is valued for its impressive blooms, which typically measure 15 to 20cm across and can cover the shrub in a stunning floral display from November through March. Their bold presence makes them ideal for foundation plantings, cottage gardens, and mixed shrub borders.

Growing Mop Top Hydrangeas in New Zealand

Mop top hydrangeas thrive in a range of New Zealand climates, preferring morning sun and dappled afternoon shade. They grow well in fertile, well-drained soil and appreciate regular watering, especially during dry periods. These hydrangeas are quite tolerant of coastal conditions and are often found flourishing in gardens across Auckland, Wellington, and beyond.

For best results, enrich the soil with compost before planting and mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring by removing dead stems and old flower heads. Mop top hydrangea varieties are robust and relatively pest-free, requiring minimal maintenance once established.

Uses and Combinations

The mop top hydrangea’s classic look pairs beautifully with a range of other garden favourites. It’s often featured alongside smaller-leafed shrubs, mixed perennial borders, and pathways where its vibrant heads can be truly appreciated. If you’d like to diversify your hydrangea collection, consider adding varieties like Hydrangea Masja, known for its bright pink compact blooms, the deep red Hydrangea 'Leuchtfeuer', or the unusual bicolour Hydrangea 'Harlequin'. Each brings distinctive colour and texture to your garden throughout the season.

Choosing the Right Variety

When selecting a mop top hydrangea, consider the mature size, flower colour, and overall shape that best complements your garden style. Compact options like Hydrangea Masja are perfect for small spaces or pots, while larger varieties make dramatic statements in bigger beds. For even more diversity, explore other standout mophead types such as Hydrangea 'Todi' and Hydrangea 'Trophy'.
