Can you grow Monstera deliciosa outdoors in New Zealand?

In milder regions of New Zealand, especially in frost-free areas, growing Monstera deliciosa outdoors is absolutely possible. These plants prefer warm, humid environments similar to their native Central American rainforests. Place your Monstera in a sheltered spot that gets dappled morning sunshine or bright indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch their beautiful leaves, while too little light will slow growth.

Ideal conditions for Monstera deliciosa outdoors

For best results, plant Monstera deliciosa in rich, free-draining soil. Ensure the soil stays consistently moist, but never waterlogged. Apply a layer of quality mulch to help maintain soil moisture and keep roots protected. Outdoor Monsteras appreciate a feeding in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage that lush, iconic foliage.

In exposed or windy areas, provide some shelter or grow your Monstera beneath taller trees and shrubs. Cold winters can damage Monsteras. In cooler climates or if you expect frosts, it's wise to grow Monstera deliciosa in a large container that can be shifted indoors over winter.

How big will Monstera deliciosa grow outdoors?

When grown outdoors, Monstera deliciosa can become a real showstopper, reaching several metres in height with enough support. Plant them near a sturdy fence, wall, or a mature tree, and you’ll see those dramatic aerial roots take hold. Outdoors Monsteras often develop larger leaves, and if your plant is mature and happy, you may even see fruit.

Pests, care, and common challenges

Fortunately, Monstera deliciosa is relatively low-maintenance outdoors. Keep an eye out for scale insects and mealybugs, but serious problems are uncommon. Prune any damaged leaves to keep your plant healthy and encourage new growth.

Remember, Monstera deliciosa outdoors must not be exposed to frost. In the South Island or higher elevations, treat this beauty as a seasonal or container specimen.

Companion plants and alternative Monsteras

If you love the tropical look of Monstera deliciosa outdoors, there are plenty of other houseplants and Monsteras to consider. For striking variegation, check out Monstera albo 'variegata' or the petite, trailing Monstera adansonii. Monstera 'Monkey Mask', Monstera standleyana albo, and Monstera siltepecana are all rewarding choices for indoor or sheltered outdoor locations.

Pair your outdoor Monstera with tropical companions like Disporum cantoniense Moonlight, Ctenanthe compressa, Peperomia magnoliifolia, Schefflera Green Goblin (Green Arboricola), and Caladium Red Flash for a lush, vibrant garden sanctuary.

Bring your garden to life with Monstera deliciosa outdoors

With the right climate and care, your Monstera deliciosa outdoors can become a true centrepiece, transforming shady corners into a tropical haven. Enjoy the bold leaves, air-purifying benefits, and unique foliage that only Monstera can offer.

It’s easy to fall for Chamaemelum nobile (Chamomile) and Dianella 'Little Jess', but Ginkgo biloba, Acorus gramineus variegatus, and Protea Fiery Sunset offer a different kind of delight.
