What Makes the Money Maker Plant Special?

Crassula ovata has earned its “money maker plant” moniker thanks to its fleshy, rounded leaves that look like jade coins, symbolising wealth and good fortune. The plant is a slow-growing evergreen succulent, forming a small shrub that can reach up to a metre in height. It’s perfect for both pot culture indoors or as a feature amongst rock gardens and succulent borders. The money maker plant is also known for its resilience and ability to thrive on minimal water, making it suitable for busy families or those new to plant care.

Growing and Caring for Crassula ovata

One of the reasons the money maker plant is so beloved is its undemanding nature. Place your Crassula ovata in a bright spot with indirect sunlight—think an east- or north-facing window—or in filtered light outdoors. Well-draining, gritty soil is key, and a cactus or succulent mix works perfectly.

Only water when the top few centimetres of soil are completely dry. Overwatering is the fastest route to root rot, so err on the side of underwatering. In New Zealand’s temperate climate, the money maker plant can be grown outside in frost-free areas, but it also makes an excellent, long-lived houseplant.

If you love the unique forms and colours of succulents, consider adding other wonderful Crassula relatives to your collection, such as Crassula arborescens, Crassula sarmentosa Comet, or the compact Crassula ovata minima.

Styling and Plant Combinations

The money maker plant’s bushy habit and shiny leaves make it a striking feature in modern containers, Asian-inspired planters, and succulent bowls. For a vibrant display, combine it with eye-catching succulents like Echeveria Pink Cloud, Delosperma 'Peridot', or architectural stunners such as Agave vilmoriniana.

Propagating the Money Maker Plant

One of the greatest rewards of owning a money maker plant is propagation. Snip a healthy leaf or stem and allow it to callous for a day or two, then place on gritty soil and mist lightly. New roots will soon form, resulting in new plants to share with friends or grow your own indoor jungle. If you’re looking to diversify further, consider charming Crassula types like Crassula pellucida variegata or classic Crassula argentea (Jade Plant).
