They are held above the strap-like, green leaves which serve as a lovely backdrop to the flowers as it grows to 50 cm tall and the same wide. Hemerocallis Rose Cherub is commonly mass planted as a groundcover, planted around the base of larger trees, included in borders, added to a mixed planting, or included in cottage gardens.

Rose Simplicity Violet Serenity

“Violet Serenity” is a magnificent small, shrub rose owing to its colourful display of bright pink flowers. The showy blooms are borne as clusters from late spring through into summer. The foliage comprises glossy, dark green leaves which provide a lovely backdrop to the flowers. Unlike other roses, this variety only has very short thorns so is a lot more “user friendly”. This deciduous plant typically grows compactly to 70 cm tall and the same wide and is generally pruned each winter with about 75% of the stem removed. That said, this variety can also be left unpruned and will not get out of control like traditional rose varieties. It performs best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. It also has exceptional disease resistance. “Violet Serenity” is commonly included in a mixed or border planting, included in a courtyard or cottage garden, planted around outdoor living areas, or maintained in a container.

Why Choose Roses for Your Garden

Roses are treasured in Kiwi gardens for good reason. Aside from their exquisite blooms, they’re hardy, adaptable, and many varieties are bred specifically for our New Zealand climate. Roses come in climbing, shrub, and ground cover forms, making them versatile for every spot—from the front border to the backyard fence. Their long flowering season, ease of care, and potential for fragrant cut flowers make them an excellent choice over the standard selection you might find under mitre 10 rose plants.

Unique Alternatives to Mitre 10 Rose Plants

Looking for something a little different from the standard options? We offer an exceptional range of roses and rose-like perennials to enhance your garden palette. For striking colour, Rose Simplicity Violet Serenity provides vivid violet blooms and a lush, disease-resistant form. If you prefer playful, warm tones for your beds or containers, Rose Strawberry Blonde will delight with its blend of soft pinks and golds that change with the seasons.

For those who want long-lasting flower power, Rose Diamonds Forever offers extraordinary resilience and repeat blooming—a perfect substitute for classic mitre 10 rose plants. And if you love rose-like colour but want low maintenance, Hemerocallis Rose Cherub (Rose Daylily) brings similar beauty and toughness without the thorny upkeep.

Caring for Roses in New Zealand

Achieving the best results from your roses, whether chosen as mitre 10 rose plants or unique specialist varieties, begins with planting in well-drained soil in a sunny position. Regular watering and mulching help retain moisture, while monthly feeding during the growing season supports vigorous blooming. Prune in winter to encourage new growth, and keep an eye out for common pests. For a burst of summer colour in rockeries or pots, consider companions like Portulaca Pazzaz Sunset (Moss Rose Plant) to fill gaps and accent your rose display.

Find Your Perfect Rose Alternative

Instead of settling for standard mitre 10 rose plants, browse our curated selection for special varieties tailored to New Zealand gardeners. With options like Rose Simplicity Violet Serenity, Rose Strawberry Blonde, and beautiful perennials such as Hemerocallis Rose Cherub (Rose Daylily), there’s a rose waiting to suit every style.
