Miscanthus sinensis

Miscanthus sinensis is an ornamental grass that grows as a clump of narrow, arching, green leaves. The colouring gives a light silver-green effect to the foliage, hence the common name, Japanese Silver Grass. Tall spikes of plum-like flowers are borne in summer, which are cream with a pink tone as they grow to 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide. Miscanthus sinensis is commonly included in mixed plantings, planted around a water feature, used as a backdrop for other plants, or included in borders.

Why Choose Miscanthus Grasses?

Miscanthus grasses are highly valued for their upright habit, versatility, and resilience. Drought-tolerant and adaptable to a range of soils, these grasses thrive throughout New Zealand. They provide year-round interest, transitioning from fresh green blades to golden winter stems. Miscanthus is also an excellent choice for creating privacy screens or windbreaks, preventing soil erosion, and adding vertical interest to contemporary plantings.

Another classic option is Miscanthus Gracillimus, known for its graceful arching leaves and coppery flower heads.

For gardeners wanting something a bit more dramatic, Miscanthus 'Zebrinus' features striking horizontal gold bands, making it the perfect accent plant. How to Use Miscanthus in Your Garden

The possibilities with miscanthus are endless. Plant in groups for natural-looking drifts, or line up along fences for a living privacy screen. These grasses pair beautifully with perennials, other ornamental grasses, and native plants. Their tall, feathery plumes add structure to autumn and winter gardens, while their foliage remains attractive even after the first frost.

Miscanthus is also increasingly used as a sustainable landscaping option, thriving in low-water settings and supporting biodiversity. The arching foliage provides shelter for wildlife, and the plant’s clustering roots help stabilise slopes or banked areas.
