Features of the Meryta sinclairii Puka Tree

With its broad, paddle-shaped leaves that can grow up to 50 cm long, the Meryta sinclairii puka tree brings a dramatic, almost tropical effect to New Zealand gardens. The leathery, dark green foliage is evergreen, providing year-round structure and colour. Puka trees can reach up to 8 metres tall, though commonly stay much shorter when grown in home gardens. Large clusters of small yellow-green flowers appear at the branch tips, followed by decorative berries loved by native birds.

Ideal Growing Conditions

The Meryta sinclairii puka tree thrives in mild, frost-free conditions and prefers a sheltered site away from harsh winds or intense afternoon sun. Sandy or free-draining soils suit it best, and it’s a perfect pick for coastal properties thanks to its salt tolerance. If you garden in cooler regions, plant your puka in a warm microclimate or large container so you can move it to shelter in winter.

Design Uses in the Garden

Puka’s architectural foliage makes it an excellent choice for adding bold texture and form to subtropical or modern-themed gardens. Its upright growth pairs beautifully with finer-leaved trees such as Acer pensylvanicum or Acer japonicum (Full Moon Maple) to create contrast and visual interest. The Meryta sinclairii puka tree is also an excellent backdrop for flowering trees like Magnolia Todd Gresham (Todd Gresham Magnolia Tree), or for the winter interest of Hamamelis Jelena.

Companion and Variegated Forms

If you love the classic puka but want to experiment with different foliage colours, consider its stunning cultivars. Meryta sinclairii 'Cream Edge' features creamy-variegated leaves that light up shaded corners, while Meryta sinclairii 'Moonlight' offers luminous, pastel-green tones. Both varieties retain the easygoing nature of the Meryta sinclairii puka tree but add their own flair to the landscape.

Caring for Your Puka

Caring for the Meryta sinclairii puka tree is straightforward. Mulch well to conserve moisture, water during extended dry spells, and provide a slow-release fertiliser in spring. Puka is generally pest-free, though it benefits from protection in its early years. Pruning isn’t usually needed, but can help keep its shape tidy or restrict size for smaller spaces.

Enhance Your Garden with Puka

From modern landscapes to native plant collections, the Meryta sinclairii puka tree offers something special. Mix it with elegant flowering choices like Cercis canadensis Alba (White Redbuds) for seasonal layers, or let it stand alone for a dramatic statement. Explore our complete range for coastal, frost-free, and architectural tree ideas in your New Zealand garden.
