Features and Growing Tips for Meryta sinclairii puka

Meryta sinclairii puka is easily recognised by its immense, bright green leaves, which can grow up to 50 centimetres long. The leaves cluster at the ends of thick, soft stems, giving the plant an exotic appearance year-round. Puka thrives best in well-drained, fertile soil with some shelter from harsh frost, as younger plants can be sensitive to freezing temperatures. Plant Meryta sinclairii puka in a position with partial to full sun, and it will reward you with rapid, lush growth. Once established, this tree tolerates dry spells, coastal winds, and salt spray, making it well-suited to exposed sites and coastal gardens.

Regular mulching around the root zone will support steady growth, and light pruning can help maintain a neat shape if desired. While it generally grows as a single trunked small tree, Puka can also be encouraged to maintain a multi-stemmed form for a bushier appearance.

Landscape Uses and Companion Plants

Thanks to its bold foliage and elegant structure, Meryta sinclairii puka is perfect for use as a feature specimen, screening plant, or a dramatic backdrop in subtropical-themed landscapes. It works beautifully combined with New Zealand native grasses, flowering perennials, or other architectural trees. For extra impact and seasonal interest, consider pairing Puka with companions like Magnolia soulangeana Alba, which offers gorgeous spring blooms, or the vivid red flowering Metrosideros excelsa 'Scarlet Pimpernel'. For a formal touch, Carpinus betulus Fastigiata provides vertical lines that contrast beautifully with Puka’s broad leaves.
