Why Choose Meryta sinclairii?

Meryta sinclairii (Puka) is prized for its huge, shiny leaves and upright form. It creates dramatic structure in gardens—ideal for those wanting to make a statement. Native to northern New Zealand, Puka thrives in mild, coastal environments and is well-adapted to wind and salt spray. As it matures, its handsome trunk and architectural canopy become even more impressive. Use it as a solitary accent, plant several for a tropical border, or pair with other native trees for a truly Kiwi landscape.

Growing Meryta sinclairii

Puka is known for its fast growth and tolerance of different soil types—just provide shelter from severe frosts. Plant your Meryta sinclairii in a sunny or partly-shaded spot with good drainage. Mulch to keep roots cool and feed with slow-release fertiliser each spring to support robust leaf growth. Water regularly while establishing, but once mature, the Puka is reasonably drought-tolerant. Whether you’re rejuvenating a coastal property or starting a new urban garden, Meryta sinclairii is a breeze to care for.

Landscaping with Meryta sinclairii

The strong tropical look of Puka combines beautifully with other NZ natives and exotics. Try grouping with dense green hedging plants like Acmena Speed Screen or bamboo such as Bambusa oldhamii for layered texture. For contrasting foliage shapes, Meryta sinclairii pairs well with fine-leaved trees like Streblus banksii (Turepo). Need more tree inspiration? Browse unique trees like Acer pseudoplatanus Worley (Acer Worley) or classic natives such as Prumnopitys ferruginea.
