Why Choose Magnolia Little Teddy Bear?

Magnolia Little Teddy Bear is prized for its versatility and compact size, growing to around 4-6 metres tall and 2-3 metres wide over many years. Unlike larger magnolia varieties, it fits seamlessly into suburban gardens or along driveways. The dense foliage is ideal if you need a hedge or privacy screen, and the tree’s tidy shape requires minimal pruning.

Its creamy, cup-shaped flowers open gradually, perfuming the garden with a gentle citrus scent. Magnolia Little Teddy Bear tolerates a range of soil types, provided the ground is well-drained, and it performs well in both full sun and part shade. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant and stands up well to New Zealand’s diverse climate conditions.

How to Plant and Care for Magnolia Teddy Bear

For the best results, choose a sheltered position with protection from harsh winds, especially when young. Prepare the soil by digging in compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage. Space your Magnolia Little Teddy Bear trees about 2-3 metres apart if planting as a hedge, or use a single specimen to anchor your landscape design.

Water regularly while your tree becomes established, and mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Apply a controlled-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage vigorous growth and prolific flower production. Pruning is rarely needed, but you can shape the tree in late winter if desired.

Design Ideas and Companion Plants

Magnolia Little Teddy Bear holds its own in a mixed border or as part of a structured formal garden. Its evergreen foliage contrasts beautifully with deciduous trees and striking underplantings. Pair your magnolia with bold-flowered friends like Magnolia Star Wars or deep burgundy Magnolia Genie for layered seasonal interest. For a different foliage texture, plant alongside Betula 'Wade's Gold' or the sculptural Brachychiton rupestris (Queensland Bottle Tree).

If you’re looking to expand your magnolia collection, consider the elegant, small-flowered Magnolia stellata Waterlily, glossy Magnolia grandiflora Little Gem, or stately Magnolia DD Blanchard. Each offers unique character, leaf colour, and form to complement Magnolia Little Teddy Bear.
