Lobelia pedunculata Country Park

“Country Park” is a fast growing groundcover. This vigorous plant grows as a mat with the horizontal stems forming roots wherever they come in contact with soil. The stems carry small and rounded, dark green leaves which are adorned with masses of small, blue flowers through spring and summer. This herbaceous perennial typically grows to 10 cm tall and 60 cm wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It does not like dry periods and will tolerate moderate frost once established. It may die back during winter but will regrow again in spring. “Country Park” is commonly used as a groundcover, included in rock gardens, grown between pavers, or planted to trail from a container.

Features and Growing Tips

Lobelia pedunculata Country Park is loved for its mass of delicate lobelia sky blue flowers that appear from late spring right through to early autumn. Its lush green foliage forms a dense mat, making it ideal for suppressing weeds and covering bare patches. This lobelia prefers moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, though it can tolerate full sun in cool climates. With good drainage and regular watering, it rewards you with continual blooms and robust growth. It’s also tolerant to light frosts and can handle New Zealand’s temperate conditions.

For best results, plant Lobelia pedunculata Country Park in spots where it can sprawl and soften edges—around paths, in rock gardens, or at the front of mixed borders. Pair it with other shade-loving groundcovers, such as Lobelia angulata (Panakenake), for a seamless, cottage garden effect.

Design Inspiration and Plant Uses

The lobelia sky blue flower, with its delicate colour, pairs beautifully with strong foliage plants and spring-flowering bulbs. Use it to complement deeper blue varieties like Lobelia puberula or to contrast brighter reds and purples found in Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' and Lobelia speciosa. Its gentle blue shade harmonises wonderfully with garden classics such as Geranium Bertie Crug (Hardy Cranesbill) or the elegant Helleborus niger (Winter Rose), creating cool-toned borders that glow throughout the season.

Lobelia pedunculata Country Park is also a clever solution for hanging baskets, window boxes, and patio planters—its trailing stems and vibrant blooms spill over the edges for maximum impact. Combine with statement perennials such as Clivia Rainbow Hybrid (Natal Lily), Alstroemeria Inca Rio (Peruvian Lily), or Canna Felix Ragout for dynamic, colourful displays.
