Why Choose Little Spire Russian Sage?

Little Spire Russian Sage stands out for its upright growth, usually reaching just 60 to 80 cm tall. Its aromatic, finely divided silver-grey leaves form a lovely contrast to the dense spires of lavender-blue flowers from early summer through autumn. This compact size keeps your garden looking neat while attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

One of the most appealing features is its tolerance to hot, dry conditions and poor soils. Once established, Little Spire Russian Sage rarely needs extra watering and shrugs off coastal winds or urban pollution, making it a smart option for tough New Zealand climates.

Little Spire Russian Sage in the New Zealand Garden

Position your Little Spire Russian Sage in a sunny spot with free-draining soil. It excels in exposed beds, rockeries, and Mediterranean-inspired plantings. Plant individually for a striking accent, or en masse for a soft, swaying sea of blue. As a perennial sub-shrub, it pairs beautifully with other drought-tolerant choices.

For a larger version with similar effect, consider Perovskia Blue Spire (Russian Sage Plant). If you want to explore more Perovskia varieties, take a look at Perovskia atriplicifolia (Perovskia plant).

Companion Plants and Design Ideas

Little Spire Russian Sage adds movement and texture to any border. It pairs well with ornamental grasses, echinacea, or for a striking contrast, plant beside Phlomis russeliana (Turkish Sage) with its bold yellow flowers. For a splash of vertical blue, try combining with Salvia Indigo Spires (Indigo Spires). Those wanting to introduce more interest and native resilience might also appreciate Callistemon 'Little John'.

How to Care for Little Spire Russian Sage

Care is a breeze. Trim back stems in late winter or early spring as new growth emerges. This encourages bushier growth and maintains a compact shape. Provide full sun and avoid soggy soil or excessive fertiliser which can lead to floppy stems.

With its long flowering season, aromatic foliage, and robust nature, Little Spire Russian Sage is an ideal pick for New Zealand gardens seeking colour and structure with minimal fuss. Add a few to your landscape for a season after season display that will make both gardeners and pollinators happy.
