Why Choose Little Honey Hydrangea

Little honey hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Little Honey’) is prized for its striking, oak-shaped leaves that start bright yellow in spring and mature to mellow gold in summer. In autumn, the foliage shifts to warm bronzy-red, adding a second season of colour. In early summer, large clusters of delicate white flowers appear, persisting for weeks and gradually fading to pink as the season progresses. This hydrangea’s compact, upright habit makes it perfect for smaller gardens or as an eye-catching accent plant in mixed borders.

Growing Conditions and Care

Little honey hydrangea thrives in part shade and appreciates rich, well-drained soil. While it can handle some sun, too much harsh light can scorch its vivid leaves. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool during hotter months. Water regularly during establishment, but once settled, this tough little hydrangea is quite drought-resistant. Pruning is rarely needed—just remove any dead or damaged wood in early spring to encourage healthy new growth. A slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring will help promote lush foliage and abundant flowering.

Landscaping Ideas and Companions

The unique colouring and texture of little honey hydrangea make it a standout in woodland gardens, alongside ferns and hostas, or mass planted under deciduous trees. It also shines as a patio or courtyard specimen, where its golden tones catch the afternoon light. For extended hydrangea flair, why not combine little honey hydrangea with classic varieties like Hydrangea Masja, the vivid blooms of Hydrangea ‘You Me Together’, or the elegant Hydrangea Madame Plumecoq? Each brings its own style, forming a lush, flowering tapestry throughout the warm months.

Other Hydrangeas to Consider

Looking to build a collection of hydrangeas with different colours and forms? Alongside little honey hydrangea, you might enjoy the double blooms of Hydrangea You Me Passion or the charming, compact Hydrangea Mrs Kumiko. These varieties, with their varying shapes and shades, add layers of visual interest and make your garden a true hydrangea haven.
