Liriope, also known as lilyturf, is a hardy perennial grass that brings texture and colour to New Zealand gardens. Whether you’re using it as lush ground cover beneath trees or edging along a shaded pathway, understanding liriope growing conditions is key to getting the most out of this versatile plant. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the ideal environment for liriope, and introduce some popular liriope varieties suited for Kiwi gardens.

Liriope 'Gold Banded' produces green leaves edged with gold, and masses of lavender coloured flowers in summer. This herbaceous perennial grows as a tidy clump to about 35 cm tall and the same wide, performing best when positioned in full sun or partial shade. Liriope 'Gold Banded' is an excellent choice for cottage gardens, adding to a mixed planting, including in borders, or for planting around outdoor living areas.

Liriope spicata, commonly known as Creeping Lily Turf, grows as a clump and produces arching, strap-like, dark green leaves. Short stems carrying masses of tiny, pale lavender-white flowers emerge amidst the foliage during summer. It typically grows to 45 cm tall and the same wide, but will spread to colonise a much larger area over time. Liriope spicata is an excellent choice for cottage gardens, border plantings, or as a groundcover.
