About Convallaria majalis (Lily of the Valley)

Convallaria majalis, commonly known as lily of the valley, is admired for its arching stems filled with clusters of pure white penda nt bells. Flowering in late spring, it spreads gradually by underground rhizomes to create a lush carpet of foliage and blooms. The sweet scent attracts both admirers and pollinators, adding life as well as beauty to your garden.

How to Grow Lily of the Valley

Lily of the valley prefers partial to full shade and moist, humus-rich soil—perfect for those tricky, shady garden spots where other plants may struggle. Once established, it's drought-tolerant and very low-maintenance. Plant rhizomes in autumn or early spring, about five centimetres deep, and space them to allow for natural spreading. Water during dry spells and mulch to keep roots cool and moist.

Garden Uses and Companion Plants

Because of its dense, low-growing foliage and sweet blossoms, lily of the valley is ideal for underplanting trees, creating shady woodland gardens, or filling in along paths and walkways. For a stunning shade garden, combine lily of the valley with other shade-loving perennials like Tiarella Pink Skyrocket for frothy pink accents, or Viola 'All Black' for dramatic contrast. Fans of pastel palettes may enjoy mixing with the soft pink blooms of Convallaria majalis Rosea.
