Why Grow Lily of the Valley Bush in Your Garden?

If you’re searching for a hardy, low-maintenance shrub with exceptional ornamental value, the lily of the valley bush is a superb choice. Its long-lasting flower clusters offer a welcome splash of white or pink before many other plants have begun to bloom. These shrubs thrive in well-drained, acidic soil and prefer partial shade—making them ideal companions for camellias, azaleas, and rhododendrons. The new growth is often tinged with bronze or red, adding extra seasonal appeal. You’ll find that lily of the valley bush is also deer-resistant and relatively pest-free, so you can enjoy an attractive garden with minimal fuss.

Top Varieties of Lily of the Valley Bush

Choosing the right variety of lily of the valley bush ensures you get the form and flower colour that suits your taste and garden style. For a classic, well-known cultivar, Pieris Lord Wakehurst (Lily Of The Valley Bush) is a popular favourite, prized for its profuse clusters of fragrant, creamy-white blooms and compact growth habit.

For a touch of elegance, Pieris Temple Bells stands out with its showy, pendulous flower racemes that arch gracefully amid dark foliage. If you’re seeking a hint of pink, Pieris Pink Delight (Lily Of The Valley Shrub Pieris japonica) will delight with its rosy-hued blooms and striking new growth that transitions through shades of red and bronze.

Planting and Caring for Lily of the Valley Bush

Plant your lily of the valley bush in rich, well-drained soil, ideally in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade or dappled light throughout the day. Mulch annually to keep the roots cool and moist, and feed in spring with an acid-loving plant fertiliser. These shrubs benefit from occasional pruning after flowering to maintain their shape and encourage bushy new growth.
