What Makes Lilly Pilly Varieties so Popular?

Lilly pilly varieties are incredible for creating instant privacy screens, shelterbelts, or formal hedges, thanks to their fast growth and dense branching. Their shiny leaves, often flushed with bronze or red on new growth, add year-round interest. These hardy natives tolerate pruning, urban conditions, and a range of soils—making them exceptionally versatile. Many lilly pilly varieties also boast clusters of creamy flowers in spring or summer, followed by ornamental berries that attract birds and bring a splash of colour to your garden.

Popular Lilly Pilly Varieties in New Zealand

You’ll find a fantastic selection of lilly pilly varieties, each with their unique features. Here are just a few top picks for New Zealand gardens:

Eugenia ventenatii (Lilly Pilly)

This lush shrub is prized for its upright growth and thick green foliage. Eugenia ventenatii (Lilly Pilly) is popular for clipped hedges and coastal gardens because it’s resilient and reliable. It produces fluffy white flowers followed by appealing purple berries.

Syzygium australe

One of the most popular lilly pilly varieties for hedging, Syzygium australe offers lush, glossy leaves and attractive, reddish new growth. Its tidy habit makes it suitable for both large screens and smaller topiary shapes, and it readily produces edible pink berries.

Eugenia jambolana (Java Plum)

For a larger lilly pilly tree, Eugenia jambolana (Java Plum) is an eye-catcher with its rich, dark green leaves and dramatic purple fruit. It’s an excellent choice for those seeking both ornamental value and a shade tree. The fruit is also enjoyed fresh or used in preserves.

Eugenia myrtifolia (Syzygium myrtifolia)

Compact and easily maintained, Eugenia myrtifolia (Syzygium myrtifolia) works well as a dense hedge or container plant. Its classic lilly pilly foliage and abundance of berries are ideal for adding texture and interest to smaller spaces.

Choosing the Right Lilly Pilly Variety

When selecting from the many lilly pilly varieties available, consider your garden’s scale and climate, the space you have available, and your preferred leaf or berry colour. Some gardeners also enjoy experimenting with related species such as Eugenia caryophyllata (Clove), which shares the classic lilly pilly look and aromatic flowers.

With so many lilly pilly varieties on offer, you’ll find the perfect option to thrive in your landscape, enhance your outdoor spaces, and attract native birds. Explore our range and create your ideal garden display with lilly pilly varieties today.
