Popular Lilly Pilly Tree Varieties

Lilly pilly tree varieties are notable for their glossy evergreen foliage and decorative fruits that attract native birds. The following are some of the most sought-after species for Kiwi gardens:

Syzygium australe

One of the most popular lilly pilly tree varieties, Syzygium australe is known for its rapid growth and adaptability. This Australian native features dense, deep green leaves and produces clusters of white fluffy flowers followed by bright pink or red berries. It's an outstanding choice for dense hedges or screens, and can be easily shaped to your desired height.

Eugenia ventenatii (Lilly Pilly)

Eugenia ventenatii (Lilly Pilly) brings a lush, tropical feel to gardens with its dense foliage and lovely new bronze-tipped leaves. This variety is often chosen for formal hedging and topiary, thanks to its neat growth habit and tolerance for regular trimming. Its purple berries add a vibrant pop of colour during the cooler months.

Eugenia myrtifolia (Syzygium myrtifolia)

For those seeking a compact lilly pilly hedge, Eugenia myrtifolia (Syzygium myrtifolia) is an excellent choice. The glossy green leaves and attractive red new growth make it a standout in any setting, while its creamy-white flowers and red berries are highly decorative. It's well-suited to pots, borders, and small spaces.

Eugenia jambolana (Java Plum)

If you're after a lilly pilly with edible fruit, Eugenia jambolana (Java Plum) could be just what your orchard needs. This variety produces deep purple, plum-like fruit, which can be eaten fresh or turned into jam. It grows into a mid-sized tree with glossy leaves, making it both a productive and ornamental option.

Eugenia caryophyllata (Clove)

While best known for the spice harvest, Eugenia caryophyllata (Clove) is another worthy member of the lilly pilly family. With its attractive evergreen foliage and clusters of aromatic flower buds, it's ideal for those who appreciate a sensory garden.

Planting and Caring for Lilly Pilly Tree Varieties

Lilly pilly tree varieties thrive in most New Zealand garden soils, preferring a sunny to partly shaded position. They are generally drought-tolerant once established but respond well to regular watering and feeding, especially for lush hedge growth. Light pruning encourages dense branching and keeps plants neat. Most varieties are resistant to local pests and diseases, making them easy-care additions to urban or rural plantings.
