Why Choose Ligustrum Ovalifolium Evergreen?

Ligustrum ovalifolium evergreen stands out among hedging plants for its rapid growth, dense habit, and glossy leaves—a combination perfect for privacy hedges and windbreaks. As a semi-evergreen to fully evergreen shrub in much of New Zealand, it keeps its foliage even through winter, ensuring your garden always has structure and colour.

This privet shrub is easily shaped, tolerates pruning, and responds well to regular trimming, making it simple to maintain a neat, uniform hedge. Its toughness extends to drought tolerance and resilience against urban pollution, so it's superb for both city and rural properties. Ligustrum ovalifolium evergreen also adapts to diverse soil types and sun exposures, from full sun to partial shade.

Planting and Care Tips

To create a dense, attractive hedge, plant ligustrum ovalifolium evergreen at intervals of 60–90cm. Prepare the soil with organic matter and water in well, especially during dry spells and establishment. Although it’s tolerant, annual feeding and mulching will enhance foliage quality and growth rates. Regular pruning from late spring into autumn keeps ligustrum ovalifolium evergreen tidy and encourages bushiness.

Garden Uses

Ligustrum ovalifolium evergreen is chiefly used for hedges and screens but also works beautifully as a specimen shrub. Its adaptability means you can use it to border driveways, outline garden beds, or form formal features. For gardens where privacy is a must, evergreen privet is an excellent choice, growing thick and tall enough to obscure unwanted views.

If you love colour variety, consider mixing hedges with Ligustrum ovalifolium 'Aureum', which sports striking golden-edged leaves for added contrast.

Alternatives and Related Privets

The ligustrum family offers several great options. If you appreciate the ligustrum ovalifolium evergreen but want to explore other textures or leaf forms, try Ligustrum vulgare (Common Privet) for a classic hedge, Ligustrum Rotundifolium (Ligustrum japonicum) for rounded leaves, Ligustrum sinense (Chinese Privet) for airy growth, or Ligustrum lucidum (Tree Privet) for a larger, tree-like form.
