Stunning Colour for Every NZ Garden

Leucadendron Safari Sunset NZ thrives in a wide range of garden situations, from coastal plots to sheltered urban sections. Its upright habit grows to around 1.5 to 2 metres tall, making it perfect as a feature shrub, hedge, or backdrop in mixed borders. The vivid red and green foliage adds a dramatic accent, especially when planted alongside other complementary species such as Leucadendron Plum Supreme or Leucadendron Gold Strike, for an eye-catching display.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Leucadendron Safari Sunset NZ is well-suited for New Zealand’s climate, tolerating wind, salt spray, and light frosts. Plant it in full sun for best colour development and ensure well-draining soil. While drought-tolerant once established, regular watering during dry spells will keep the plant healthy and vibrant. An occasional light prune after flowering will maintain its shape and encourage bushy new growth.

Plant Uses and Landscaping Ideas

This striking shrub is incredibly versatile. Use Leucadendron Safari Sunset NZ as a statement specimen, mass-plant it for impact, or add it to native garden schemes for texture and contrast. Its foliage is perfect for cutting—lasting in vases for weeks. For a layered look, pair it with the golden tones of Leucadendron Corringle Gold or experiment with different Leucadendrons like Leucadendron Candy Delight and Leucadendron Clone 91.

In mixed borders, Leucadendron Safari Sunset NZ combines beautifully with the silvery foliage of Banksia marginata (Silver Banksia), or the bold shapes of Abutilon 'Voodoo' (Flowering Maple). For fragrance and pollinator-friendly planting, consider pairing with Lavender 'The Prince'.

Caring for Leucadendron Safari Sunset in NZ

Once planted, Leucadendron Safari Sunset NZ is low maintenance. Remove spent stems annually to encourage fresh growth and maintain its tidy form. Avoid heavy, clay soils or overwatering, as these conditions can lead to root issues. Mulch lightly to suppress weeds and conserve moisture, and feed with a slow-release, low-phosphorus fertiliser suitable for Proteaceae.
