Why Choose Cymbopogon citratus?

Cymbopogon citratus, or West Indian lemongrass, is a must-have for home gardeners and chefs alike. Grown widely for its citrus-scented leaves and succulent stalks, lemongrass brings a distinct tang to teas, stir-fries, curries, and marinades. Not only does it enliven dishes, but its tall, lush growth makes a dramatic statement in any garden landscape.

Lemongrass plants are perennial in most of New Zealand’s frost-free regions. Once established, these sun-loving grasses require minimal care—just regular watering and a sunny spot. Their strong roots help stabilise soil, making them useful in ornamental grass plantings alongside species like Trisetum antarcticum and Baumea articulata.

Growing Lemongrass in New Zealand

Plant your lemongrass in a full sun position and well-drained soil. In cooler parts of New Zealand, lemongrass can be grown in pots and overwintered indoors. Feed with an all-purpose organic fertiliser in the warmer months to encourage lush, green growth.

Regular harvesting encourages bushier plants—just cut stalks from the base as needed. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Lemongrass pairs beautifully with other ornamental grasses in your landscape, such as Scirpus ferrugineus and Lomandra White Sands, adding texture and movement to garden beds.
