Why Choose Leatherleaf Viburnum?

Leatherleaf viburnum is renowned for its glossy green leaves, leathery texture, and rounded habit. Its dense foliage serves as an effective windbreak or hedging plant, making it ideal for exposed New Zealand sites, and provides a lush backdrop for seasonal flowers in mixed borders. In spring, this shrub is adorned with clusters of small, tubular white blooms held above the foliage, followed in autumn by berry-like fruits that attract birds to your garden. Thanks to its low maintenance needs and pest resistance, leatherleaf viburnum is also a popular choice for effortless landscaping.

How to Grow and Care for Leatherleaf Viburnum

Growing leatherleaf viburnum couldn’t be easier. Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly during its first growing season to establish deep roots. Once established, this tough shrub withstands periods of dry weather and occasional frost. Pruning leatherleaf viburnum is straightforward; cut back after flowering to maintain the desired shape and encourage bushier growth. If you’re interested in mixing and matching with other viburnum varieties, consider partnering leatherleaf viburnum with Viburnum Hedge Master for a diverse, evergreen screen, or interplant with Viburnum davidii (female) and Viburnum davidii (male) to add extra interest and seasonal berries.

Landscaping Uses and Companion Plants

Leatherleaf viburnum thrives in hedges, screens, or as a standalone feature shrub. Its rugged evergreen foliage and strong form also make it an excellent structural plant to anchor garden beds. For a textural companion, pair with the striking, architectural leaves of Rumohra adiantiformis (Leatherleaf Fern), or bring more contrast to your planting scheme with the bold, spiny leaves and yellow winter flowers of Mahonia bealei (Leatherleaf Mahonia). Thanks to its adaptability, leatherleaf viburnum also works beautifully in woodland gardens and under tall trees, where it brings brightness and vitality year-round.
